Paint Horses are built for versatility and maneuverability. As such, they are well-balanced and muscular with a broad chest, powerful hindquarters, and a low center of gravity. However, Paints also display a refined sense of beauty about the head and neck. Most possess the same stock body style as a Quarter Horse

Frame Overo: solid base color (bay, black, chestnut, etc) with white irregular patches; jagged in shape. White rarely crosses the back lower legs tend to be dark, the tail is 1 color. The head is white or bald-faced, blue eyes are not uncommon.

 

Splash Overo: A splash or splashed white overo pattern appears like a solid-colored horse who has been dipped in white paint, and the color splashed up from the bottom. It is the least common of the overo patterns.The legs and bottom portion of the body are usually white, as is the head, and blue eyes are common. Edges where white and dark color meet are usually crisp and sharp. 

 

Tobiano: Vertical spotting pattern. Large rounded spots, that cross the topline. Dark heards, mostly white legs and white or multicolored tails. 

 

Tovero: Dark pigmentation around the ears, sometimes called a "Medicine Hat" or a "War bonnet". Dark pigmentation around the ears, expanding to cover the forehead and/or eyes.Isolated "shield" dark markings completely surrounded by white, particularly on the face or chest.One or both eyes blue.Dark pigmentation around the mouth, which may extend up the sides of the face and form spots.Chest spot(s) in varying sizes. These may also extend up the neck.Flank spot(s) ranging in size. These are often accompanied by smaller spots that extend forward across the barrel, and up over the loin.Spots, varying in size, at the base of the tail.

 

 

Marking Variations

Horses must have Paint Horse blood in their blood lines. Horses that have coat patterns, but no Paint Horse blood will not be accepted.
